Safe storage and preventing accidental exposure

Health Canada advises keeping cannabis locked away, out of sight and reach of children and pets, and keeping edibles separate from regular food and drinks.

Health Canada warns that accidental cannabis poisoning—especially involving edible cannabis and children—can cause serious harm. Its safe-storage guidance recommends keeping cannabis locked away and out of sight and reach of children and pets.

Use secure, deliberate storage

  • Keep cannabis in its original packaging and store it in a locked cupboard, lockbox or safe.
  • Keep edible cannabis separate from regular food and drinks.
  • Never leave cannabis unattended where children can access it.
  • When a child spends time at someone else’s home, Health Canada recommends asking caregivers to store cannabis safely.

Read the official instructions

Health Canada’s safe-storage guide provides current federal recommendations. Its page on cannabis poisonings in children explains risks, prevention and signs that require action. Follow package information and consult the relevant professional for a particular situation.

If exposure may have occurred

Do not wait for this website to assess an exposure. Contact the Ontario Poison Centre for current poison-related help. For a possible animal exposure, contact a veterinarian. See our accidental exposure information.
